Don’t Be A Jerk | Week 1

SERIES:  Don’t Be A Jerk
MESSAGE:  Don’t Judge
DATE:  August 8, 2021

Therefore, whatever you want others to do for you, do also the same for them, for this is the Law and the Prophets.  Matthew 7:12

“Do not judge, so that you won’t be judged.”  Matthew 7:1

“judge”

  • To analyze, evaluate, appraise and discern.

“krino”

  • To condemn

We should evaluate positions.

We shouldn’t devalue people.

“Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. The Pharisee was standing and praying like this about himself: ‘God, I thank you that I’m not like other people—greedy, unrighteous, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week; I give a tenth of everything I get.’   Luke 18:10-12

“But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even raise his eyes to heaven but kept striking his chest and saying, ‘God, have mercy on me, a sinner!’  I tell you, this one went down to his house justified rather than the other, because everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted.”  Luke 18:13-14

  1. Who is on my “thank God I’m not like them” list?

“For you will be judged by the same standard with which you judge others, and you will be measured by the same measure you use.” Matthew 7:2

“The one without sin among you should be the first to throw a stone at her.”
Then he stooped down again and continued writing on the ground. When they heard this, they left one by one, starting with the older men. Only he was left, with the woman in the center. When Jesus stood up, he said to her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?”
“No one, Lord,” she answered.“Neither do I condemn you,” said Jesus. “Go, and from now on do not sin anymore.”  John 8:7-11

2. How do I want God to judge me?

We are in danger when being right is more important than being loving and helpful.
