The Anawim

“The throwaway people.”

Blessed are the poor in spirit, for the kingdom of heaven is theirs.

Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.

Blessed are the humble, for they will inherit the earth.

Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.

Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy.

Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.

Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God.

Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for the kingdom of heaven is theirs.   Matthew 5:3-10

Blessed – “makarios”

“You have the approval of God.”

Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.  Matthew 5:4

Mourn – “pentheo”

Loud crying, wailing, suffering, lamenting

The Spirit of the Lord God is on me, because the Lord has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and freedom to the prisoners; to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor, to comfort all who mourn…     Isaiah 61:1-2

Comfort – “parakaleo”

Ally, helper, counselor

God’s dwelling is with humanity, and he will live with them. They will be his peoples, and God himself will be with them and will be their God. He will wipe away every tear from their eyes. Death will be no more; grief, crying, and pain will be no more, because the previous things have passed away.   Revelation 21:3-5
